don't blink, Haloween breif sketches.

Making statues out of people. Draw from reference

This was a lot fo fun to do, once i had sufficently sketched out the reference i attempted to image what it might look like in low poly model form. Some parts worked some didn't.

More reference sketches, thinking of parts i wanted to use in a composition. With the female reference i stylezed the hair and added the wings to give her a more distinct gargoyle like feel.

Liked the way bat wings looked/worked so attempted to incorporate them into the design.

Had another go at making her look like a 3D model, worked ok but i should have just mirriored one the together side of the face.

Playing with stock architecture to find a more solid composition.

Would you enter?

some quick composition sketches

Spent a bit too much time refining the line drawing, looks way to anime...

Had a hard time figuring out a composition that would portray why this creature is scary(moving statue).

At this point i took a previous composition and knocked it up in Maya. Set up some cameras and lights to use as a perspective reference.

Camera 1

Camera 2

Settled on the longer shot camera two, used a couple of photo references for bricks, the rest is painted with some multiply and colour layers.

I hit a bit of a detail wall, i should have sketched on top all of the base values and pieces in the composition. Instead i went into high detail right away and ran out of steam unfortunately.

Halloween sketches and moodboard 2

Started with silhouettes with the scorpion/demon theme in mind

Doodled some monster heads

Then found this sketch i did a month or so back, we chose a word each and did a drawing on it in half an hour. I think this one was Lonely Glass Alien monotone.

This is something i had thought of developing so i put together a second moodboard for a gargoyles idea.

Haloween Moodbord

Looked a various film and game characters aswell as a cool zbrush modeled bat. Not sure where i want to go with this breif, pretty open really.

+ Random sketch :]
scary...

moonlit forest

I didnt do a lot of designing into a tree, just painted a sketched scene, It's meant to be in a deep dark forest, with only moonlight coming through the canopy

But this is a very dark image

Played with levels to lighten

Played with exposure and gamma

Played with hue/contrast

These tree's dont have a lot of character designed into them but i feel the have quite an enchanted feel. disney scary forest feel, almost expect them to have faces on them.

Tree Graphic panel sketches.

Some friends of mine are finalising an album they have recorded and have asked me to do some graphic panels to go along with the music.

This is something we discussed a year or two back but never got round to releasing, i'm really excited that we have got this going into motion, bouncing idea's back and forth i sketched these scene's that apply to our tree brief somewhat.

Trying to show depth of field in a pencil sketch, making tree's further away less defined.

Same again, i liked this far/wide/low perspective, a lot of room for subtle imagery.

A high angle perspective, just practicing scene composition to show off the most important and interesting parts of a scene while progressing the story onwards.

No tree's in this one, the character is peering in through a skylight at a masquerade ball, linked into the music in a waltz-like section.

Tree

Tree brief, design and interesting tree, a tree with character but not a character tree.

A lot of my own work in there.

Misty abstract, tree's burned down

I'll explain these two later but the idea was to show distance with tone as well as scale.

Surreal Compositions

This first one was just roughly painted to try out putting it in the underwater scene, perhaps showing through the mirror

To add some depth i had a look online for some general water textures i could use.

4 put together in this image, just playing around really, using the textures to help me find the composition i have in my head.

Wanted to practice by drawing from a reference, so took to doing a traditional pencil sketch of some under water photography.

Had a go at the same reference in Corel Painter 12, trying out brushes
turned out a nice piece, though not surreal or an original work.

Found this glass/water fracture image and started seeing a possible composition in it.

Used a model reference here with a layered glass mirror texture, painting over them.

Almost went for that composition but decided that the odd orb glass thing took up to much of the focus

Took the layered mirror idea into a more focus composition here and used a different model reference to sketch out a final composition here in photoshop so i could reference in Corel painter, a program im not as familiar with.

It turned out ok, though the perspective changed slightly from the reference sketch. Corel painter made this difficult, had to stop a few times to think how best to paint an aspect. Also my machine seemed to be struggling with the program, a bit laggy.

I think as less of my scene was underwater compared to the reference painting i did, it meant the messiness didn't work as well.

Surreal Image breif

A very broad brief this week, took my awhile to feel out where i wanted to go with it.

I Liked how interesting and surreal some underwater photography looked when the perspective was changed. From this i looked at reflections, more specifically general self reflection.

Mixture of imagery and meaning.

practicing drawing underwater reflections.

I enjoy making these odd light forms, liked the twisted perspective.

trying to work out a odd perspective underwater scene, it's empty to put something in.

yellow wing robot

After feeling that the previous perspective view wasn't working i went back to the sketches and continued to render in the design. This was admittedly quite rushed however, the colours are just a quick colour layer over the top of the black and white. I did have a lot fo fun with the lighting here though, where i spent most of the time, showing my more illustration style rather than design, something i will have to work at if i want to do concept art.

robot silhouette's

3 very inkley done silhouettes

I enjoy this style of sketching, it leands its self espesially well to robots becuase of the whisps 'peice' like shapes that come out. This is a custom brush i made in photo ship, a hard round brush with a size and shape jitter set to pen sensitivity.

Developing the top right sketch as i feel it is the most unique and interesting, tried to detail some of the shapes made but i got a little carried away to quickly and went into colour/texture painting. Afterwards i went back and drew out the arm and wings in attempt to show the designs more clearly.

Jet/Pack wings?

Attempted a more perspective shot but did find this quite difficult. On the night that it was done i was getting quite frustrated with it but looking at it now it doesn't seem as bad as i thought, should have perhaps continued with it. I was also trying to show the suit powered down here.

Sarah's Nephew

Been commissioned to paint my friends nephew, here are some outcomes
